Am I A Single Lady?

This adorable but sad video is of a little boy singing "Single Ladies" by Beyonce in the car with his older sisters. When informed that he is not a single lady, the kid has an averse reaction. :-)

Project Runway by Meg Y.

It seems to be that many people find themselves at a point when they are sitting in front of the TV and they don’t know what to watch. I have come to resolve the problem with the best show EVER, Project Runway. Project runway is a reality TV shows where designer compete for prizes and money. It’s dramatic, and I believe it is more real than shows like Dancing with The Stars or Survivor, because these people have been working on design all their working lives, or have a huge dream, their not celebrities dancing around and breaking their legs. On this show, the designer creates works of art, and has incredible challenges. On one episode, they had to make outfits out of trash bags, in another they had to base their clothing on sections of NYC, like Harlem and the Upper East Side. This show runs on Thursdays from 9 to 10 pm, so it maybe a little late for some people, but if you have OnDemand, the new episodes are posted the day after they air, so you can watch on Friday night at 8. I hope you watch and enjoy!!

Lily Has Opinions: Justin Bieber (obviously by Lily H.)

We all have opinions on something. Maybe they’re about that hilarious sitcom, or that disgusting meatloaf your mom makes. At the same time, people could have opinions about your opinions. Your grandpa, for example, could hate that annoying sitcom and love his daughter’s meatloaf. I am an extremely opinionated person, and it takes a lot to change my mind (a.k.a. I’m also extremely stubborn). And, as those of you with strong opinions know, it has its advantages and disadvantages. People with strong opinions tend to be persuasive, if they have good reasons to back up their statements. But, those who are strong in their statements and stubborn in their changes often get on the flow-goers’ nerves. It’s good to have opinions. You don’t want everyone to be the same. For example...I like to make fun of things, which has inspired this column. Different tastes and opinions boost your individuality. It’s good to be different than others, and it can showcase your style, sense of humor, and talents. But hey, you’re not reading this to hear my life lessons. You could be, I guess, but that would be kind of…boring, right? No offense. Just my opinion.
Anyway, this week’s topic is Justin Bieber. Yeah, yeah, I know you probably don’t want to hear about it. He’s so 2009, right? Well, too bad. We all know him, which makes it easier for you all to relate too. It’s not like I’m doing The Strokes. Who? Exactly. So Justin. I’m very opinionated about this guy. Made his big break on YouTube and now he’s a singer all over Kiss 108. Great for him. Now you don’t have to agree with me on this, but I really…I don’t like him, to put it nicely. I say this as "One Time" comes on the radio—and that’s just it. His voice is probably what bothers me most. It’s not that bad of a voice, just very nasal-y. High pitched. Personally I think he should wait until his voice is fully developed to start a singing career. Yeesh. And it’s not just that. Being the stubborn person I am, I refuse to believe celebraties are that amazing. They’re just like regular people, but more…fake. Some can be down-to-earth, really they can, but the nose jobs and the computerized music and all the takes before completing a scene bother me, I admit, more than it really should. So how does this all connect back to J.B.? Am I just rambling on and on about how much I loathe most celebs? Why, yes, I am. But I also have a point: as Justin Bieber’s career grows, I’m almost positive he’ll become one of…them. For now, I’ll put up with him…but you just wait. In two or three years, he could be the one getting a nose job.
Do you have an opinion on JB? Comment and share it!

Bye Bye Birdie: A Review by Isabel F.

I went to New York City over winter break, and got to do something awesome: see the revival of Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway. Birdie tells the tale of Conrad Birdie, a beloved pop star drafted to the US army, and his hardworking manager, Albert Peterson. Rose, Albert’s secretary and longtime girlfriend, has a brilliant idea for Conrad’s sendoff. She picks the name of one of the many Conrad fans out of a hat and draws Kim MacAfee from Sweet Apple, Ohio. Conrad will journey to Sweet Apple and give “One Last Kiss” to Kim before dramatically leaving for duty. This is supposed to raise enough money for Albert to quit the show biz, and of course Sweet Apple is ecstatic. Albert, Rose, Conrad, Kim and the entire town of Sweet Apple find themselves drastically changed by this experience. Birdie is a peppy, playful show with a lot of heart, soul and energy. There are many comic parts of the musical, like when Kim’s father (hilariously played by Bill Irwin) is raised by a crane while on the “Ed Sullivan Show.” The endless resources, costumes and sets a Broadway production has access to really made the show for me. In one opening scene during a number called “Telephone Hour” the teenage actors swung around in brightly colored telephone booths while singing and dancing. The singing was Broadway-caliber, but compared to others in that realm fairly average. I liked the contrast of lighthearted numbers with more tender, meaningful scenes. Natalie Hill played Rose Alvarez: she was the understudy for Gina Gershom but still did a fantastic job. She and Allie Trimm, who played Kim MacAfee, did a pretty duet in “What Did We Ever See in Them”. Conrad Birdie was portrayed by Nolan Gerard Funk, which was not very memorable for me, but he got the job done. John Stamos (from Full House) played a more relaxed Albert than I’ve seen before, but impressive nonetheless. There was one point where he started cracking up in the middle of a solo, which I didn’t mind as much as some would. Overall, Bye Bye Birdie could have been more clean and polished, but it was very entertaining and definitely made you “Put on a Happy Face.”
